Industry Events

Reflections from Realcomm Europe 2009

Earlier this week I spent a couple of days in London attending the second Realcomm Europe event and meeting up with great people from the RE.net world.

First of all, congratulations to Jim Young and Howard Berger for putting this event together. I very much believe there is a need for such events. The 'IT-in-real-estate-industry' can't complain that no one sees the benefits of our solutions if we are not creating/supporting as many channels as possible to communicate our offers. It's like Christmas, if you don't give, you want receive.

So the Realcomm team; it's we that say Thank You.

The size
There were some 140 people attending the conference, which of roughly half were from property companies. The rest were software suppliers, consultants and media. In addition there were some 10 exhibitors.

A rather small event considering that an IT-in-property-day in Sweden a few months ago also attracted some 100+ attendees. (Sweden is one 6th of UK in terms of population.)

The content
A challenge in organising an 'IT-in-the-real-estate-industry' event is that the area covers everything from Intelligent building to board room reports (including CRM, tenant reporting, marketing, property management, valuation, market information and so on). Which makes it extremely challening to put together a compelling set of presentations.

From my perspective the most interesting reflections of the day where;

'Boardroom quality dashboard online and update'
An interesting discussion took of regarding why the 'upper' management doesn't push the reporting to be more up to date than a paper report that has data that is maybe up to a month old. "Why not a screen with all the up to date data?".

The battle of an XML standard in the industry
The standard is there. Who is stopping it? The lack of interest from the clients or the software suppliers defending it's market shares? There seems to be some differences why it takes so long..

... but the banks will solve the standard issue
Stephen Spooner, Executive Chairman of PISCES, had a great presentation pointing out the current financial crisis will have "a number of regulations coming in" and "lenders need data to analyze the tenants". All this detailed data will then also be requested to be updated. In other words, "the lenders will push the evolution!".

Innovation... finally
The biggest innovation at the event didn't come from the presenters, but the organisers.

At the final session, the Realcomm team gave out TurningPoint audience response system devices and ran a series of questions. That really sparked the conversations.

Great innovation!
Next year maybe the attendees will push it start using Twitter as a backchannel... Well, one day it happen. (Like for the standard format!) The residential brokers are already doing it.

Reflections from an IT & Property event in Stockholm

Last week I attended the third annual 'IT & Property' event in Stockholm arranged by Seminar Design. This is the third year (for coverage of 2007 and 2008.)

After a rather slow start, two years ago, this event is starting to take off. I was surprised by the energy at the event. (Even Though I would have preferred even more.)

Some 130 people from 80 companies attended the conference. A majority of those where from state or municipality owned companies. Does it take a long term view in order to focus on the benefits of IT in real estate?

At the exhibition area a handful companies displayed their products. The one which caught my attention was Jetas Quality System.  Which "is a state-of-the-art, web based, real estate and property management and inspection tool. With a simple system of barcodes and a PDA you can maintain 100% control – no need for notebooks, bits of paper or Post-its." The service is used by, for example, IKEA and Jones Lang LaSalle.

Two reflections
What I bring with me from the event is mainly:

  • "the systems need to talk to each other"
A line that was heard repeatedly. In other words, the use of standards like
the XML scheme from fi2 is going to increase the upcoming years.

  • "It has to be easy to use"
Simplicity and user friendly seems to be more important than advanced.

The best presentation
Among all the presentations there was one that stood out exceptionally; Sören Sandell, CTO at Vasakronan. One of the largest property companies in Sweden.

Not only did he show the impressive Intranet they are using to simplify as many processes as possible with in the organisation. For example, most of the users of the Property Management system is using it through the interface of the Intranet.

However, the most impressive thing was the strategy they had to achieve it. The focus for any system development was;

  1. user friendly                   "think Google"
  2. well design                    "think Apple"
  3. easy to administrate

At this point I was highly impressed (never ever heard something like this from any one in this industry). So when he then said that they were aggressive on eliminating the use of Excel spreadsheets in the organisation by adding easy to use functionality at the Intranet I started to applaud!

Thanks Sören for making my day.

RE.net event in London on the 4th march

Interested in technology and commercial real estate?
Then you have to visit the Realcomm events.

Originally from the USA but has now grown to include events and tours all over the globe. In the beginning of March (4th) the Realcomm Europe 2009 will take place in London. You will find the brochure here.

Meet me in London
I'm really looking forward to the event. Especially since I wasn't able go the event in 2008 (which was the first Realcomm Europe event). This is THE event for IT in commercial real estate since Property Computer Show (PCS) has faded away and is now an 'agency event' focusing residential real estate.

Are you going to Realcomm in London?
Drop me a line and lets go for a beer/dinner.

SIME follow up

We didn't make it to the stage... but at least we made it to the screen at the largest Internet conference in Sweden. (Congratulations to Jaycut for beating us.)

Much has been written about the SIME event, like 1, 2 , 3 (in English), 4, 5 (in English), 6. and 7 (most comprehensive).

My reflections
This was my second SIME event and it's a conference that differs a lot from all other (real estate) events I attend every year. The SIME crew (and especially Ola) makes this more to show and entertainment. But one has to keep in mind that this is a media event focused on the Internet.

It's great to visit an event that has a different approach to Internet and gives you examples of the web that you haven't seen before. For example how the Swedish pop band Ace of Base is letting their fans alter their music and create videos on their site. They don't fight Internets implication on the music industry, they use it.

The best I take with me besides all the great meetings was the presentation by Japp Favler (Forrester) on 'Recession marketing'. Looks like a great knowledge for 2009....

Datscha nominated for SIME Award

(Disclosure: I'm the Product Manager at Datscha and rarely write specifically about Datscha,
but this is to good to be true...)

Datscha is nominated for the prestigious SIME Award 2008 in the category 'Best System Supplier'!

Being the Product Manager for the last 8 years this make me very proud indeed. It has for sure been quite a ride.

SIME
SIME is the largest Internet event in Sweden which gathers 1 200 attendees every year. The 2008 event will be held on the 12-13th of November in Stockholm.

SIME Awards
The SIME Awards was established in 1996 to celebrate online excellence. The category 'Best System Supplier' focuses on;

"What B-2-B hardware, software or application supplier is delivering the best value to its customers? The prize will be awarded for innovative use of new and existing technology to achieve a superior solution, significant for the customer's core activity."

Hand over the prize...
For right obvious reasons I strongly believe that Datscha fulfil those criterias. We score 90% satisfied customers, in average over 5 years. Not to mention that we have 1 500 users when it costs (from) 10 000 USD per seat and year to log in! It has to be significant.

Well, at 2 pm on Thursday, we know the answer.
I'm actually already nervous...

Inman on a European research tour

In preparation for their global event in January (New York) the Inman organisation is going on a European research tour. They will be visiting;

  • London              October 17-20
  • Amsterdam     October 22
  • Paris                 October 27
  • Berlin                October 30

Interested in meeting them?
Drop a line to Joel Burslem at Inman, joel@inman.com

Unfortunately, they will not be visiting Sweden.

Joining Inman 'International Advisory Group'

It's official, I'm now part of the Inman 'International Advisory Group'.
Makes me proud just to be on the same list like the people below.

The Inman events
I went to my first Inman event this summer (remember, I'm located in Sweden!) and it was brilliant (coverage). If you're interested in the field of IT meeting residential real estate this is the place to be.

Events
I'm happy to help organisations like Inman to further develop their events. Because I strongly believe each country (and then a few global ones) needs an event like those. Both where end-users can meet suppliers, but also where believers could meet up and share the energy.

Inman Conference 2008 coverage

The largest conference on the topic of (residential) real estate and IT is the Inman Real Estate Connect which was held this week in San Francisco 2008' . I guess there were more than 1 000 participants. Not only from the USA but also Australia, New Zealand, Spain and UK.

Below are the highlights of the week (in no particular order) from the perspectiv from a Swedish Product Manager.

Meeting up with all online friends
Meeting up all people whose blogs you are reading and the people behind many of the services in person has been indeed rewarding. Truly inspiring.

A demo of next generation websites
Tyler Davey from Infusion gave a preview of the new Radisson site that will be released in the autumn. Built in Silverlight and extensively using Microsoft Virtual Earth; the user experience was incredible. Tyler also mentioned that the incredible software Photosynth will be included in Virtual Earth. See this video and get blown away by the photosynth technology.

The Swedish connection
In the presentation "25 Online Real Estate Sites You Don't Know About But Should" Brian Boero, 1000Watt Consulting, started of with showing the Swedish real estate search engine Booli!

A demo of Trulia iPhone Application
Trulias very own Mr Social network Rudy gave me an demo of their iPhone application (YouTube movie). Very impressive. I believe devices with location functionality will have a great impact on the way we find real estate information.

Walkscore
You know that the Americans find the gas price high (still less then half of prices in Sweden) when services like WalkScore is being created. Nevertheless, a great service that measures the walkability of an address.

Webbased solutions to get rid of Excel
As a Product Manager of Datscha it is great to see that there are more people how believe that a web solution is better then the best Excel spreadsheet. At Inman I found two services in this area; T-rex (Property Management) and eRealInvestor ("Analyze your own property and investments and optimize your returns!")

The techiness of the attendees
As an official geek, it was great to see how many attendees that took their notes on a laptop and where present online even at the conference.

During the entire conference there was an active discussion on Twitter.
An example of the discussion.

Read the entire conversation here.

Next time you doing a presentation at a conference be aware that quite a few in audience could be twittering about you, google your facts and browsing through your LinkedIn resume. In other words, be humble and stick to the facts.

More Inman coverage
Below a some more reading about Inman.
I'm sure there is more to come.

Finally...
Thanks to everyone who made this conference such a brilliant experience.

Liveblogging from ReBarCamp

Today I attended the ReBarCamp event in San Francisco.

Start of the day
First of all it's in the Swedish American Hall. Pretty wired for a Sweden who has travelled half over the world!

Anyway, there are some 100+ people here and for most of them (including me) it's there first visit to a conference set up as a Barcamp., which means that it is "user generated conferences . In other words, it is up to the crowd to on the spot create the sessions.

So there was quite a confusing crowd in the beginning, but quickly a great list of sessions were created.

Then the sessions started and the conversations for sure kicked off.
How many conversations do you find in the photo below?

Below are quick notes from some of the sessions I attended.

Blog survey
The Center for Real Estate and Social Technology (http://varbuzz.com/crest/) has conducted a survey among bloggers in the USA. They will do those surveyes every quarter.

Result from the first survey
128 responses

Agents 65%

Brokers 23%

50% using WordPress  (especially the veterans)

50% hosted

The median start date is 1 aug 2007

The median is 12 post in may 2008

Medium number of comments 3,4 per post

80% had fewer than 50 commments in may

The more posts you put in the less comments per post

1315 uniqe browsers per month is average

Video 101

The crew from Zipvo organised an open discussion about video.
It seems to really start coming off over here.

The discussion was primarily around;
   1. type of camera
   2. "start now, even if the quality isn't there, you will learn"
   3. the business model for the video platforms out there

Podcasting

A great conversation that covered everything from showing audio software to discussing why to use podcasts on an agents site.

The answer for the latter question was according to one of the participants;
   "The consumer will come to your site for three reasons;

       1. to figure out what his house is worth

       2. to view the listings

       3. to learn about the community

And it is in the last point that you could successfully add Podcasts."

The sum up was (as for video session above) start easy and focus to improve.
An easy starting point is TalkShoe.

Beer with bloggers
After all the sessions the crowd went to the bar next door for the Inman Conference kick off party "Beer with bloggers".

Thanks Zillow for the open bar.

To sum up
Not only did I learn a lot about the US market and what topics are 'hot', also had the opportunity to meet up with people I prio only know through their blogs.

Furthermore, I did also get a hand on experience of BarCamps. For sure liked the concept! Tomorrow starts the Inman Conference. A more 'normal' conference. I sure that will be as great as of today.
